About our annual symposium
The symposium is created by a committee of sculptors, chosen by the Board
of Directors of California Sculptors Symposium, Inc.
The purpose of the symposium is to offer a unique experience for adults
who are professional and non-professional sculptors in different mediums.
The committee selects professional sculptors as instructors for daily
workshops and to assist individuals throughout the week. A large generator
and air compressor for stone carvers is rented for the entire time. A
professional life model is used for drawing and working in clay. We have
3 meals a day together in the camp's large dining room. We offer sleeping
space in new and comfy straw bale lodges, and offer a discount for those
who prefer to sleep at home or in other local accommodations.
Sculpture By The Sea
(our annual sculpture show at the symposium) Our non-juried show is for
participants of the symposium. We have a judge and present awards. The
setting offers an inspirational showcase of sculptures.
Silent Auction
During the symposium, we have a silent auction that allows us to support
student participation in the symposium. Attendees donate all of the auction
items and we all have a good time.
Students - Students who are currently enrolled in professional
education are allowed to attend at a discount. Selected students are sponsored
by the generosity of our suppliers.
Cambria community - The camp is on the ocean side of the quaint
artsy village of
Cambria. We appreciate the several hundred Cambrians who visit our symposium
and sculpture show and learn more about the creation of sculptures and
leave with great art for their homes.
California Sculptors Symposium
Inc (CSS INC)
In 2002, Fayrene Parrish and members of the Central Coast Sculptors Group
in San Luis Obispo created a 5-day retreat for sculptors. In 2003, this
event changed to the California Sculptors Symposium (CSS) and has been
hosted by Camp Ocean Pines each year.
In October 2005, the 5 member Board of Directors formed California Sculptors
Symposium Inc, as a non-profit corporation. In October 2007 we were awarded
501c3 federal tax-exempt status.
The purpose of CSS INC is to provide an educational symposium for sculptors
at least once annually.
